How are they related?

The distinction between the hotel industry and the hospitality industry is one communal space of misunderstanding, with many people wrongly thinking the two words apply to the same thing.

Nevertheless, although there is a cross-over, the distinction is that the hospitality sector is larger in nature and encompasses many various markets. The development of hotel rooms and support services is the primary interest of the hotel industry.

By analogy, in a more general context, the hotel industry is concerned with recreation. It is necessary to note that the hotel industry is a catch-all term used to describe guest accommodation-related facilities.

Difference between hospitality and hotel management

Hotel Management, as the term suggests, is focused on managing all aspects related to the functioning of a hotel. From the time a guest arrives at a hotel to the time he checks out, the responsibility of all activities during the guest’s stay in the hotel forms part of Hotel Management.

This includes the following:

  • Front Desk and Reception
  • Concierge
  • Housekeeping
  • Room Service
  • Food and Beverage (F&B)
  • Guest Services
  • Travel Desk
  • Health and Spa

All of these and more are taught in detail in course of hotel management in Kolkata.

The word ‘Hospitality‘ means that the guest or tourist is taken care of. Hospitality is not exclusive strictly to the hotel, although it could be anywhere.

After all it is important to cater to any guest or visitor to an office, club, hotel, establishment, etc., because if there is a qualified hospitality industry specialist to accept them, then the guest or visitor is assured of a good experience. The ‘Tourism’ business aims to employ hospitality practitioners, a significant branch of which is hotel management.
